Are We There Yet? How to Minimize Distractions While Driving with a Small Child

by administrator

Driving with a baby or a toddler in the car can serve as a great challenge. If your child is still not old enough to speak, it can be a great frustration being in traffic on the highway while your baby cries and not being able to figure out what it is they need. While having trusty kids car seat covers such as the ones sold by NIKO can go a long way, you will still have to know how to minimize distractions in the car on your own.

Bring activities to distract them

You can bring along age-appropriate entertainment in the car while your children ride in their kid proof car seat covers. Some ideas depending on your child’s age include baby toys, pacifiers, coloring and reading books, or a device to watch TV or a movie on.

Play child-friendly music or singing

Play soothing music or nursery rhymes in the car. You can either tune into a radio station designated for children or purchase music on your cell phone to play via Bluetooth in your car. If you have an older car, then you can’t go wrong with some CDs. You can also try singing to your child either along with the music or if you’re really confident about your voice, going solo. Try singing some popular nursery rhymes such as Mary Had a Little Lamb or Three Blind Mice. Don’t worry, even if you got brutally rejected from the high school glee club, your baby loves the sound of their parents’ voices.

Play games

If you have more than one child who is around the same age or perhaps another young family member, you can encourage them to play games in the car. Some classic games include I Spy and The Rhyming Game.

Pull-Over or Taking Breaks

When you can, park your car in a safe area to attend to your child’s needs. It is much safer than trying to resolve any issues while on the road. This is especially a good idea if you are traveling a long way from home, allowing your child(ren) to step outside for a bit after being in the car for long periods of time. If you have a baby, schedule breaks accordingly to change their diaper or give them a snack.

Have Someone Else in the Car

While you will probably inevitably have to travel with your child alone, when possible, have another adult in the vehicle with you to be there to attend to your child. This will help you stay focused on the road ahead of you.
